Although hard working, thrifty and shrewd, most Michie men died before reaching a goodly age. The harsh, unforgiving environment in which they lived and worked was no doubt a contributing factor to their untimely demise.

Their lives were shaped and influenced by poverty, population expansion, social change, war, revolution and technology.
